Overcomers

Not too many people know that I was very committed to short distant running (ie. 100 and 200 meter dash) in my high school days.  I have often thought about why I never pursued professional sports.  I do know that words spoken to me may have influenced my decision.  Uncertain of professional sports was another contributor.  And yet as I watched the Olympics over the past two weeks, and the story of the now infamous Joannie Rochette I paused to stop and think.

Words of life and encouragement were poured into this vibrant 24 year old from her greatest role model, her mother.  Joannie’s mother encouraged her to learn to speak English because she felt it would open greater doors for her.  So learn she did.  She attributes part of her English training to the cartoon “Scooby Doo” which she enjoyed watching as a child.  Learning English was only one of the challenges put to her.  Her mother encouraged her to strive for excellence, persevere and give her best to everything she endeavoured.

There is no doubt in my mind, based on the interviews, Joannie has given to the media, that her mother’s words played repeatedly in her ear as she skated on the the ice in Vancouver.  She had worked tirelessly week after week, month after month, year after year, and was rewarded by entering the Olympic stage competing with the world’s best skaters.

Many would ask why God allowed her mother to die before seeing her daughter skate.  Her mother had a massive heart attack just days before Joannnie’s performance.  There are many questions we could ask and no one would blame Joannie if she chose to withdraw from the competition.  However, withdrawing was not an option for her.  She put her feet down, drew strength from the lessons her mother (no doubt her father also) had taught and entered that arena with courage and determination.  And so we must do likewise.  Put one foot in front of the other and face our challenges with overcoming faith.

We are almost through one third of the year 2010.  Whatever challenges you are facing or will face let’s purpose today to press on and press in.  I want to be an overcomer!

To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.” Revelation 3:21a (NIV)

Blessings!
