O Canada: A Home For Many

The Words of our Canadian national anthem are thoughtful and endearing.

The first line states “Our home and native land.” For those of us who were not born here, it has become our home because we chose to make it so. It’s good to reflect on the reasons you had to make Canada your home.

In my case, I really didn’t have a choice. I was seven-years-old when I came to Canada. My parents wanted more – something better – as well as living closer to other family members that had already made the move from England.

You may have been born here, so you also did not have a choice. However, there are others who were born here but have since moved to other parts of the world for one reason or another. I find it interesting to hear those people state that “Canada will always be home.”  It’s very heartwarming to hear, but when you dig deeper and hear the reasoning behind that statement, it is not hard to understand. I have heard friends and family state “the access to healthcare” or “the diversity of the country” or “the variety of seasons” as reasons for enjoying Canada. I also hear that, “I feel safe in Canada.”

Canada has become a refuge for many seeking asylum because they no longer feel safe in their place of birth.  So so open arms, our country has embraced, equipped and empowered tens of thousands to begin a new life here – O Canada.

I think you will agree that we should all join our hearts in praying very strongly today, “God keep our land, glorious and free.” It really is only God that can keep us. It is only the Creator of the universe who can make this happen; of course we have a part to play.  Working together to be mindful of others.  Look out for other people and not be totally “me” focussed.  Freedom is not the experience of many around the world – it is a gift.

It is God who I look to knowing my help comes from Him to keep our land, glorious, beautiful and free. Let me know what part of the Canadian national anthem stands out to you and by dropping me a note on Instagram at @patrussellsings or via email at info@patrussellonline.com.
