Run From Apathy

It is easy for us to become overwhelmed with our day to day activities.  We turn our phone on, slip our Bluetooth on, hop in the car and head for the Timmy’s Drive Thru, order our double double with the a toasted bagel and cream cheese.  Flip on the radio and patiently scurry through traffic until we reach our destination.  For bus commuters everything is timed to the minute.  We head out the door, down the street to the bus stop, hop on, glance at ‘fellow’ passengers who are on the regular commute.  If connecting to another bus or trai we look straight ahead, ignore anyone who might remotely resemble someone we know, get on the next transit connection and keep going until we get to our position at work.

If you stop and think about it we can go through this daily grind consumed with our schedules that we become almost apathetic to anyone else’s life but our own….is anyone agreeing with me?  Don’t get me wrong, I have been part of this rat race for years and I constantly have to catch myself, stop and ponder before we get to Friday.  It is a known fact that TGIF – Thank God it’s Friday is still more than just a catch phrase.  Sometimes I think it has become a mindset where we excuse ourselves to eat what we want on Friday.  To splurge on an outfit we don’t really need on Friday but this mentality has creeped into our daily lives becoming almost an excuse to bypass disciplines of eating right and using finances wisely.  Now, one agrees with living life to the fullest than yours truly.  However, we cannot and must not throw discipline to the wind.  So we stay on the alert, remembering what Peter states:

8Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [[d]in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour. (I Peter 5:7-9 Amplified)

The enemy of excellence and growth is medicocrity.  The scriptures states we must be “well balanced”  in another version it uses the word “sober”.  When we are off balance we are prone to fall.  Ifyou’ve ever done a Body Test on the Wii you know there’s a test done to check your body control.  When you’ve done some of the tests your are told how close you are to being perfectly balanced.  I get  the little cartoon asking me sometimes “do you find yourself falling when you walk” just because my balance was a “bit” off.  The little cartoon proceeds to tell me that by exercising everyday I can develop good posture and good balance.  Likewise spending quality time reading and meditating on the Word promotes “balance” and helps us to be sober of mind.  When we are sober in mind we are alert to the negative things, people, situations to come our way to take us off course.  Staying balanced keeps us in tune with our surroundings.  It keeps us balanced and sensitive to others around us who may be in need rather than just ourselves.  As our world continues to drive ahead at full speed let’s strive for balance all around.  We can skip the drive thru sometimes. Park the car and go in to the store.  We learn patience standing in line!

Blessings!
